Before Colors in Chaos was an album, it was hundreds of unfinished song ideas spread across a pile of messy pages.
In August 2023, I attended the Grace Center with 18 other people. Every one of us came from a different walk of life, but we were all there because our lives had reached a point where something needed to change.
Every night at 11 p.m. we had to go back to our rooms. Thats when I would sit there and scribble down whatever was going through my head.
Some pages had full verses. Others had song titles, random thoughts or just one line I didnt want to forget. Looking back now, I can barely read some of my own writing. Sometimes it takes me awhile to understand what the hell I was even trying to say.
Most of those ideas never became songs. But hidden inside all that mess were the lyrics and stories that eventually became Colors in Chaos.
The colors in the title represent the people I met at the Grace Center.
There were 19 of us in total, all with different personalities, families, addictions and stories. Some were loud and funny, some barely spoke. Some were ready to change and others werent even sure if they wanted to be there yet.
We probably never would have met anywhere else, but for that time we were all living under the same roof and trying to understand how our lives got to that point.
The chaos was rehab, but it was also the lives that brought us there.
It was addiction, damaged relationships, fear, guilt and confusion. You could see how colorful and different everyone was, but you could also feel each persons chaos underneath it all.
That is where the name Colors in Chaos came from.
The album sounds like its name too. It is raw, colorful and a little all over the place. It has boopy guitar licks, big anthem-like choruses, electric solos and drum sounds that were sometimes built using loops.
The vocals worked well, even when the recordings, editing, software use around them weren’t perfect. Honestly, processing so many rough recordings and trying to fit everything together was hard. Some takes didnt match and some probably should not have worked at all.
But somehow they did.
We took hundreds of ideas, lyrics written, rough bedroom recordings, drum loops and different voices and found the songs hiding inside all of it.
The people were the colors.
Our lives were the chaos.
And together, that became Colors in Chaos.
