The Quiet Damage is out now.
The hardest part of recovery wasnt always the big moments. Sometimes it was waking up on a Tuesday morning, signing into work and trying to act like a normal person.
I could answer calls and get through the day while still trying to understand everything that happened when I was using. There were things I did to myself and other people that didnt disappear just because the drugs were gone.
Life became quieter ... but that didnt mean everything was suddenly okay.
Thats where the name The Quiet Damage came from.
Pain doesnt always destroy your life in one dramatic moment. Sometimes it settles into the ordinary parts of it. You stop trusting people, avoid certain conversations and become very good at saying you’re fine because explaining the truth feels like too much work.
Alot of the album began as rough lyrics, voice notes and unfinished ideas that Kelsey and I worked on together.
Haunted House is different because it was originally written by our friend Joshua Arran. We recorded our version because the story fit naturally beside everything else on the album.
Once we put the songs together, we realized they were connected by the things people carry without saying out loud.
Dear Winter opens from a place of wanting love while already expecting it to disappear. The song says, “She wants to feel love, she wants to feel close, she wants a hand that wont let go.”
You want somebody close ... but when they get close, you begin preparing for the moment they leave. You question what they say, notice every change in their voice and sometimes push them away before they get the chance to hurt you.
That isnt because you dont want love. Sometimes its because love has never felt completely safe.
Wildfire Thinking is about meeting somebody whose mind feels as restless as your own.
There can be something comforting about finding another person who understands your chaos. You dont have to explain why one small thought becomes ten different disasters.
But two people understanding each other’s damage doesnt mean they know how to heal it. Sometimes shared chaos feels so familiar ... we mistake it for connection.
Haunted House looks at what happens after somebody finally leaves a damaging relationship.
The person in the song has already packed their things and spent the next month sleeping on a friend’s couch. Physically they got out ... but mentally they are still living inside that house.
The song says, “I hope your house is half as haunted as I’ve become.”
That line is one of the reasons we connected with Joshua’s writing. Sometimes leaving is only the first part.
You can change your address and remove somebody from your phone, but your mind can keep returning to the same rooms. Our version keeps the heart of what Joshua wrote while placing it inside the world of The Quiet Damage.
Smoke Signals is probably one of the loneliest songs on the album.
It is about pushing people away while secretly hoping somebody comes looking. The person leaves the television on because silence makes the thoughts in their head louder, then wonders why nobody noticed they were struggling.
The chorus says, “You weren’t looking for me, no smoke signals.”
But the truth is, they never sent one.
It isnt about blaming everybody else. It is about how difficult asking for help becomes when you have spent years convincing people you dont need anybody.
You can become so good at hiding that people believe you ... then sit alone wondering why nobody saw through it.
Walked Into Hell deals with abuse that doesnt appear dangerous at first.
We are taught that monsters will look like monsters. They will shout, threaten you or show their teeth.
Real life isnt always that obvious.
Some abusive people are calm and polite. They hold the door, say the right things and slowly convince you that everything they do is because they love you.
The song says, “The worst ones look familiar, the worst ones look like love.”
Sometimes abuse begins with attention. It feels safe, flattering and almost too good to be true. By the time you understand what is happening ... you have already stopped trusting your own judgement.
The Stranger goes somewhere more obsessive.
It follows somebody trying to hold onto another person through objects, memories and small rituals. A necklace becomes a shrine and lighting a candle becomes a way to feel that person’s presence again.
Grief can make ordinary objects feel almost sacred. You know the object is only an object ... but letting it go can feel like losing the person again.
Third Stool From the Left sounds more confident on the surface.
The makeup goes on, the clothes say trouble and the person in the mirror is pretending she doesnt already know how the night will probably end.
She takes the same seat at the bar and says, “I dont need saving yet, third stool from the left.”
There is humor in the song, but sadness underneath it too. Sometimes the person making everybody laugh is doing it because they dont want anybody asking serious questions.
Confidence can be real ... and still be covering something.
The album ends with Quiet.
That song brings everything back to recovery and the exhaustion of maintaining the version of yourself that everybody thinks is doing fine.
You can work, take care of your family, laugh with friends and keep your life moving while still feeling like something inside you has stopped.
I spent alot of time believing that functioning meant I was okay.
It didnt.
It only meant I had learned how to carry the damage without dropping it in front of other people.
Eventually, you have to admit that surviving and living are not the same thing.
The Quiet Damage isnt saying everybody is secretly falling apart. It is saying people can carry more than we realize while still showing up every day.
You may never see the hardest part of somebody’s life.
This album is for the people who made it through the loud part ... then found themselves alone with everything it left behind.
Its about addiction, abuse, anxiety, unhealthy love, grief and recovery. But mostly, it is about what happens when pain becomes part of an ordinary life.
